Can CBD improve your Sex Life?
CBD's beneficial properties means it has been added to many products, including those to help you in the bedroom, with claims that it can boost your libido and increase lubrication.
Some research studies have found that cannabinoids such as CBD and THC boost libido, while interestingly others have found they can decrease it.
Research suggests that the primary reason it can help is through anxiety relief to improve libido as some people have anxiety about sexual performance, which will decrease it. Relieve anxiety, and the desire for sex may go up.
Erectile dysfunction (ED)
According to an article in the journal BioMed Research International, Ayurveda practitioners have used Cannabis sativa, the plant from which weed and CBD are derived, for many years to improve ejaculatory function and sexual performance. The exact way that CBD may help ED isn’t fully understood, yet one theory is that CBD could help relax the blood vessels and promote blood flow. Better blood flow to the penis can relieve ED and promote longer-lasting sex.
The problem is that doctors haven’t specifically tested the effects of CBD on the penis. A small study published in the journal JCI Insight found that a single dose of CBD helped to reduce blood pressure. The researchers in this study, however, were looking at arteries that led to the heart and not ones that went to the groin.
For those who struggle with dryness and painful sex, adding a lubricant can improve sexual performance and relieve pain. Many CBD manufacturers are making lubricants that incorporate CBD as a way to enhance sexual pleasure.
Researchers have studied the effects of topical CBD as a dermatology treatment. According to a 2010 article in the journal Fitoterapia, topical CBD has an anti-inflammatory effect, which could theoretically make sex more comfortable. However, there aren’t any studies specifically on CBD and lubrication.
There are over a dozen cannabis-infused lubricants on the market — and the companies that make them say they offer a range of benefits, from reducing pain and anxiety during sex, to increasing arousal and the intensity of orgasm, to making men last longer and women orgasm quicker. A recent study of 5,398 Americans by Remedy Review found that 9.3% of respondents had used CBD sex products — and the majority of them said they noticed a difference in their sex lives. 66% of respondents who used CBD sex products said they noticed a decrease in anxiety; 72% of men and 76% of women said they experienced stronger orgasms; and 98% of respondents said that CBD alleviated post-sex soreness at least slightly.
It’s certainly possible CBD could reduce ED, enhance sexual pleasure, and boost libido, but unfortunately there’s not enough current research to prove these theories for sure... yet.
